Overview
Our indoor arena developed somewhat of a shield problem- and in our ruleset, Mega and Mega XL darts can still tag out shield users. I decided I needed a repeating Mega XL blaster to restore balance to the game- Sillybutts, at the time, was working on a Mega XL revolving pump action, but I wasn't a fan of his layout. I wanted something smaller, and, knowing the rainbow trajectory of the MXL darts, something intended to fire from the hip at an upward angle. For this reason, Ogre has a top side pump and an angled pistol grip.
This was the first time I experimented with 3D printed rifling, and used Nerf Internet Community knowledge and assistance to accomplish a task. Ogre features 4 land 10 degree twist rifling built into the chambers to stabilize Mega XL darts. You can actually shoot straight with Ogre, which at that point was an innovation.
This was also the first time I licensed a design to a vendor- Silverfox Industries carries Ogre hardware kits. This was very much a learning experience, and was the beginning of my considering aesthetics as an important part of a blaster.
Also, shields disappeared at the local arena. Mission accomplished.
